| First big event moves into newly expanded convention center Posted: 18 Feb 2011 07:32 AM PST Indianapolis - The first big event is about to take over the newly expanded Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis.The Dealer Expo opens Friday and it means big money. The Convention and Visitors Association figures the trade show and its visitors bring about $20 million to the city, one of the most lucrative events of the year It is a huge trade show for the off-road motor sports industry. Manufacturers of all replacement parts, custom parts and accessories for motorcycles, ATV's and boats are in town from across the country and around the world. This is one of the events that had outgrown the existing convention center and was considering moving to another city until Indianapolis built the $275 million expansion. "We had a lot of other options. We had a lot of cities with similar infrastructure, similar convention center, similar hotels. But Indianapolis convinced us that the expansion of the facility, the extra infrastructure that the city was building, the extra hotels going up, that would add significantly for our dealer and attendee experience, which is why we decided to stay," said Danny Phillips, Dealer Expo. "We like the atmosphere here, the motorcycle dealers like the clubby community factor; the connect city where hotels are connected to restaurants, and are connected to convention centers," he added. The trade show has been in Indianapolis since 1998. This is the first event to use almost the entire new exhibition area and most of the existing space. The Dealer Expo is not open to the public.
