There may be tons of snow on the ground, but motorcycle riders in Metro Moncton will be dreaming of summer and the open road this weekend as manufacturers and dealers show their latest toys at the Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV show.

Steven Scobie polishes a Harley Davidson Road King at the Moncton Coliseum Agrena yesterday in preparation for the Atlantic Motorcycle & ATV Show, which starts today at noon.

The show opens today at noon and is one of the largest in Canada, as the entire Moncton Coliseum and Agrena complex will be filled with motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, performance parts, accessories, clothing and riding gear.

Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. The show is owned by the Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council. It is designed as a place for manufacturers and distributors to showcase their products and connect with consumers.

Whether you are an experienced rider or just thinking about getting a bike, it is a place to look at the machines, learn about the new models and find the one that suits you best. Organizers say there are no high-pressure sales tactics as people working the booths are there to promote their products and provide information.

The show also features a full slate of seminars and information sessions on the main stage. For a full schedule, see Life & Times, Page D1 of today's Times & Transcript.

The motorcycle show will also be a place to link up with the organizers of upcoming motorcycle and ATV festivals in Atlantic Canada.

The Atlanticade Motorcycle Festival - to be held in St. Andrews July 6-10 - will have a major presence at the show with special guest Heather Ireland of Biker TV.

For the past three years Ireland and the crew from Biker TV have been on hand at the annual Atlanticade Motorcycle Festival to film the event. Highlights from the 2010 event will be profiled on Biker TV this Sunday, Feb. 13 at 10:30 p.m. on CTV.

Ireland will also appear on the main stage of this weekend's show and at the Atlanticade booth on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday at 10:30 a.m., she will screen a 30-minute episode of Biker TV on the main stage at the motorcycle show.

Organizers of the Shediac Motorcycle Rally will also have a booth at this weekend's show at the Coliseum. The Shediac event is set for the weekend of Aug. 26-28 and will include a full slate of touring rides, live entertainment, street party and lots of food. Last year's event drew approximately 3,000 motorcyclists.

Past-president Leo Doiron said the Shediac Motorcycle Rally donated over $20,000 to the Moncton Lions Sick Children Fund, and food left over from the event was donated to local food banks.

Doiron said volunteer organizers of the Shediac event want to keep growing as their festival makes a significant contribution to local tourism and the economy of communities along the coast and also in Moncton.

But he's concerned about another motorcycle festival being planned for Moncton on Aug. 19-21, the weekend before the Shediac event. He said organizers in Shediac are worried that a Moncton event would steal their thunder.

Details of the proposed new Moncton festival have not been made public, but city officials are working with local clubs and dealers to get it going.
